I first met Mike in the summer of 1970 when I began to work at Torch. He was a student then and although I was older, I was much in awe of all his capabilities! Over the years I have been encouraged by his growing Christian faith and have always appreciated the messages he has shared form the Bible and in our conversations together. It was a privilege and sometimes a challenge to serve with him on the Torch board. We had lots of fun and relaxation when we met together over the years, enjoying chats, walks and swapping canine stories!
For some years we were out of touch when I was working in India but Mike's support then and after my return home was invaluable. He has been a wonderful support and encourager for Compass Braille and I will always be grateful for his part along with other trustees and Torch staff for their part in the relocation of Compass Braille to Torch House in October this year.
Since my move to Yorkshire over three years ago I have so enjoyed Mike and Edith calling on an almost monthly basis on their journeys to and from Durham. His last visit was a very special one as not only did he come with Edith but also with their daughter Christine and the four grandchildren. It was great fun seeing him being walked round my kitchen and dinning room by Joah his toddler grandson. This visit will always be a very precious memory, we had such a good time. Non of us realized that this would be the last time I would see Mike. I shall miss his visits far more than I can say.
Mike was endlessly patient with my struggles learning to use the iPhone. It was interesting to hear about all Mike's activities and I had a great respected for all that he was involved with but it was as a friend that I truly valued him. One of my friends who has only recently come to know Mike summed him up by saying 'He was so full of life and Jesus'.
